Aldworth Samson seeking victory in BAGS Track Championship Final Standard Dogs Div B

Aldworth Samson will be seeking a strong run in the BAGS Track Championship Final Standard Dogs Div B at Perry Barr in Ireland on Sunday, December 23, 2012. He does not have a lot of experience, but has been performing really well with consistency for his team, which will make him a strong contender for victory tomorrow.

The talented greyhound has been working really hard with his team in order to improve his overall skills. This has helped him achieve some brilliant results since making his debut, but things will be slightly tougher for him in a Grade IR competition.

His rivals will come out hard at him and will cause a lot of problems for him in order to bag a cash prize of ?500 in the end. They will be looking forward to aggressive in the opening phases of the race, as the overall distance to cover is just 480 metres.

Although, the race is not a lengthy one, yet it will not be a clever idea to run out of gas after the first hundred metres. The one who saves some energy for the final moments will definitely be in a position to claim the top spot.

All contestants are young and full of energy, so the spectators at Perry Barr will be expecting a lot of entertainment. They will have to wait for quite some time though, as the action is going to kick off at 15:13 GMT tomorrow.

Guinness Wild, who is the youngest of all contestants, will definitely attract a lot of bets from the punters, as his performances have been quite impressive. Moreover, he has got a great chance of being aggressive from the start, as he has been slotted in trap number six.

The S. Cahill?s trained dog first appeared onto the scene in October 2012 and he has been delivering decent results with consistency since then.

However, he will not find it easy to weather the storm from Aldworth Samson, who is carrying the winning momentum right now.

The J. Wright?s trained hound took part in a T2 event at Perry Barr recently and should be comfortable on this racecourse. He is going to start the race from trap number four, but that will not be a big concern for him.

Cleanliness is key for robotic space explorers

WATERTON CANYON, Colo. ? The concrete-floored room looks, at first glance, like little more than a garage. There is a red tool chest, its drawers labeled: "Hacksaws." "Allen wrenches." There are stepladders and vise grips. There is also, at one end of the room, a half-built spaceship, and everyone is wearing toe-to-fingertip protective suits.

"Don't. Touch. Anything."

Bruce Jakosky says the words politely but tautly, like a protective father ? which, effectively, he is. Jakosky is the principal investigator behind NASA's next mission to Mars, putting him in the vanguard of an arcane niche of science: planetary protection ? the science of exploring space without messing it up.

As NASA pursues the search for life in the solar system, the cleanliness of robotic explorers is crucial to avoid contaminating other worlds. Contaminants from Earth could inadvertently kill life forms on other planets just as we discover that they exist.

The decontamination of spacecraft, an obscure arm of space science, has grown in importance as NASA turned its attention to places such as Mars, Titan and Europa that have environments that are potentially conducive to life.

Jakosky's immediate concern is a $671-million probe named the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN orbiter, or MAVEN, which Lockheed Martin Space Systems is building south of Denver.

The craft is scheduled to launch in late 2013. Its mission is to delve into Mars' transition from a wet and warm planet to one that is dry and cold ? vital research for determining whether Mars ever harbored life.

MAVEN should help determine how Mars lost its atmosphere ? whether it disappeared, in layman's terms, down or up.

Many scientists surmise that the carbon dioxide, water and other hallmarks of early Mars were absorbed into the planet's subsurface. ?But they haven't found evidence,? Jakosky said. ?So maybe it was lost into space. Until we know that, we can't understand how the atmosphere evolved through time.?

The probe will conduct a thorough examination of Mars' upper atmosphere. The rover Curiosity, which landed in August, is to conduct a similar study of the surface atmosphere.

The MAVEN spacecraft needs to be scrubbed so that when it impacts Mars, it is carrying no more than 500,000 spores of microbial life, so few they could fit on the head of a pin. The goal is simple, said Jakosky, a University of Colorado at Boulder professor: "Don't contaminate Mars or jeopardize your science." The trick is in the execution.

Many of the achievements that marked the onset of the Space Age meant sending astronauts into space. Today, scientists have entered a gilded age of robotic space exploration.

The rover Curiosity is just one in a suite of machines that have been sent to study new corners of space. Other missions will send probes to intercept an asteroid and visit a distant moon that could contain three times as much water as Earth.

It is an era fraught with anxiety for those who have the curious task of keeping space free of contamination.

"This business is not for the faint of heart," Jakosky says.

Planetary protection must operate on three levels at once.

First, spacecraft must not bring a potentially harmful level of microbes from Earth to another planet or celestial body. Scientists also must be careful not to mess up their own work ? signs of extraterrestrial life could be "discovered" but could actually be false-positives born on a launch pad at Cape Canaveral.

"Taking life from Florida to Mars might give you the wrong impression about Mars," said John D. Rummel, NASA's former planetary protection officer, now a professor of biology at East Carolina University.

Most pressingly, when robots or astronauts return with samples from space, scientists must take care not to expose the Earth to alien contaminants. No one knows what would happen ? probably nothing, but considering how the Earth struggles with its own invasive species, such as zebra mussels in the Great Lakes, no one wants to find out.

NRA: Video game industry 'sows violence against its own people'

After a week of intense anti-gun sentiment?following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the National Rifle Association on Friday blamed?video games and their virtual guns?for creating a culture of violence that breeds killers.

"There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people through vicious, violent video games with names like 'Bulletstorm,' 'Grand Theft Auto,' 'Mortal Kombat' and 'Splatterhouse,'" said?NRA?executive vice president Wayne LaPierre during a news conference that was interrupted by protesters. (See video above.)

While most of the games LaPierre listed are popular adult-themed games made by some of the biggest game companies in the world, the NRA chief?also called out a game called?"Kindergarten Killer" and asked why the media had ignored it.?

"How come my research department could find it and all of yours either couldn't or didn't want anyone to know you had found it?," he asked the press gathered in front of him.

If you know the name of the game, it's easy to find in a Web search, but it's not something someone is likely to stumble across.?That's because the simple, amateur Flash-animation game ? about a janitor who goes on a shooting spree in a school full of heavily armed children ? was posted in online forums a decade ago and?has never been for sale. There is no indication that the Newtown?shooter, 20-year-old?Adam Lanza, knew of its existence. Though a?Finnish site did remove the game after a shooting there, it is still available for free through other Flash sites.

LaPierre's accusations?come after lawmakers?and pundits earlier in the week?suggested that video games had played a role in the Newtown shootings. Though some reports suggest Lanza?played video games ranging from the family-friendly "Mario Party" to the violent "Call of Duty," investigators have yet to make any such connection.

While a new Gallup poll suggests that 47 percent of?Americans do think reducing gun violence in movies, TV and video games would be "very effective" in preventing mass shooting at schools,?researchers?and adolescent?psychiatrists have?spoken out this week, insisting?that the link between digital violence and real world violence is tenuous at best.?

"There is no good evidence that video games or other media contributes, even in a small way, to mass homicides or any other violence among youth," wrote?Chris Ferguson???professor of psychology and criminal justice at Texas A&M University and author of several studies on the subject,?in Time Magazine.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the real-world bloodshed, some gamers have called on their fellow players to take the time to examine their fascination with digital guns and violence.

Housing Starts, Building Permits Rising Into 2013 - Hawaii Real Estate

Housing Starts November 2011 Single-family housing starts took a small step back in November.

According to the monthly Housing Starts report from the U.S. Department of Commerce, single-family housing starts tallied 565,000 in November 2012 on a seasonally-adjusted, annualized basis. This marks a 4 percent decline from October, but is more than 100,000 higher than the count from 12 months ago.

Clearly, the nation?s new home construction market is expanding.

On a regional basis, single-family housing starts have been strongest in the Midwest; and Hurricane Sandy appears to have affected the number of starts across the Northeast.

As compared to one year ago:

Northeast Region : Housing starts down 19% on an annual basis
Midwest Region : Housing starts up 40% on an annual basis
South Region : Housing starts up 24% on an annual basis
West Region : Housing starts up 33% on an annual basis

It?s expected that new construction growth will continue into 2013, too. This is because the Department of Commerce report also showed Building Permits mostly unchanged for November at 565,000 units on a seasonally-adjusted annualized basis.

As compared to November 2011, this marks a 25% increase. Permits for multi-family homes are up 17%, too.

There are more building permits being issued today that at any time in the last 4 years.

For home buyers, this may be good news. Rising permits and housing starts suggests a more healthy U.S. economy, but it also means that home supplies may not be as tight throughout the next few months.

Overly-tight home supplies in some U.S. markets have contributed to rapidly rising home values. With more construction and larger home inventories, home prices may rise in 2013 less slowly.

The good news, though, is the mortgage rates remain near all-time lows and low- and no-downpayment mortgage programs are abundant. For today?s home buyer, there are plenty of affordable ways to purchase a home.
